Our unpaid volunteers have undertaken nearly 6,000 rescues, which is ONE A DAY EVERY DAY over the last 12 years we have no paid staff or cash reserves and rely totally upon public support and sponsors.
 Our volunteers turn out in all weathers, day or night to rescue ill, abandoned, elderly or injured animals and without charge. Our emergency service for the Guardia, local police and town halls and will rescue and remove animals in danger for them.

 You are very welcome to visit and bring along apples, carrots, lettuce, bread etc and feed them by hand and you can also help by taking dogs or donkeys for a walk, mucking out or grooming, or just relax and watch the fun ! | |
On a budget of under 5,000 Euros a month, we operate the sanctuary, animal hospice, a 24/7 free rescue service for the Guardia, police and the public, animal medical outreach project for local animals to stop them being abandoned, school visits, re homing and handicapped projects, but we can do so much more to rescue and care for animals if we have a regular income, but that is another story.

The Nerja Donkey Sanctuary, although the founder member of the new charity remains just as we are , but our new web site is at www.nerjadonkeysanctuary.com but we will also be running this one for while will we iron out any changeover problems, so please click on our electronic newsletter link to keep up to date.
Meanwhile, this web site is changing to video format so just click on the picture and off you go but so far it is only the home page but as no downloading is required, videos are accessed quickly both on dial up and ADSL.

We receive no legacies or grants, have no cash reserves and work hand to mouth and with costs rising, we have had to cut back our rescue work and concentrate around Nerja. This hopefully will ensure that our permanent long term ill Nerja residents have a permanent and happy home home
with us and will never again be abandoned due to illness, age or suffer neglect or cruelty. | |

We have a strict policy to ALWAYS re-home healthy animals, especially as we don't belive in building up herds of animals for people to gawk at when there is many people willing to give a careing and loving home to our rescued animals.
But, sadly, some animals cannot be re-homed due to illness or old age, which is why wwe have a need for Nerja. Did you know that donkeys can live to 50 years of age and have the same emotions as people of love, fear & loneliness ?

|  | PLEASE REMEMBER - Nerja is for permanent care animals
who will stay with us for the rest of their lives and if a
donkey stays with us for another 30 years, that costs
us 80 Euros a week for feed & medication.
That may not sound a lot, but that is 4,000 Euros a year
or a staggering 120,000 Euros over 30 years, almost
£90,000 at todays prices.
We are run entirely by volunteers. So you can be sure that
any donations we receive goes a much longer way with us,
and unlike UK charities, we receive no grants nor have any
tax concessions on donations or gifts in kind, and in Spain, the idea of donating to an animal charity is non existant. | | | |
We also urgently require dog walkers to help exercise our rescued dogs waiting for new homes and of course, new homes for them as well - Please call in between 10 and 1 to (last walk time) help with dog walking. This is a selection of some dogs needing new homes. | | | |

We desperately need sponsors for our permanent stay Friends that cannot be re-homed due to age or illness (a growing number) that will have to stay with us forever.
It would be nice if we could guarantee some stability at Nerja so we are wishing (and really hoping!) to find sponsors to perhaps pay for our Friends breakfast feed bills of 1,500 euros a month. Sponsors will, if they wish, have suitable dedicated plaques and mentions of their sponsorship. This may be attractive to commercial companies involved in animal activities or to local estate agents or letting agents, cafes, bars & restaurants.
